Juniors were to the fore in the Club Mile Championships last night, as Jack Partridge and Lizzie Harris claimed the quickest times among club members.

We were blessed with the presence of Steve Way, 19th in the London Marathon in April, who ran as a guest and clocked the fastest time of 4:30.5, but Jack Partridge hung on as long as he could to Steve which pulled him away from the rest of the race on laps 3 and 4. Nathan Shrubb was the fastest senior on the night but had to concede his title won last year. Simon Hayter pipped Peter Ferenczy for the first veteran spot.

The women's race was a tighter affair and the race was only settled in the last 30 metres. Abigail Jones and 12 year old Alex Phillips set off at a fast pace and while Alex dropped off after the first lap Abi kept up the pressure and at the bell had a seemingly impregnable lead of 20 metres over top senior Becky Griffith with Lizzie Harris keeping calm in her slipstream in third place. With 300 metres to go, Lizzie moved wide and started to make her move. She first moved a yard past Becky and then with 200 metres to go kicked again to close by 5 yards on Abi and pull away from Becky. Entering the home straight Abigail still had a 10 yard lead but Lizzie's greatest strength is her sprint and as she started to pick up her knees and go Abigail wasn't able to respond. Lizzie came home first, Abigail was second, and Becky was third - a great race from three great runners. A little bit further back Alex Phillips was third junior, while Janice Palmer was the first veteran.
